Overview

Phil serves as Chairman of HCVT. In this role, he focuses on maintaining relationships with the firm’s strategic clients, leading client engagements, and mentoring current and emerging firm leaders. Phil co-founded the firm in 1991 with fellow partners Jim Carlin and John Van Trigt and served as the firm’s managing partner for two decades.

Under Phil’s leadership, HCVT has grown to become the 31st largest accounting firm in the United States and the Los Angeles region’s largest locally based CPA firm with more than 700 employees and partners. The firm is known for its deep technical skills and ability to address the most complex tax issues associated with business entities and high-net-worth individuals.  

Phil addresses complex tax issues for clients in the real estate, private equity, professional services, and family office sectors. He has authored numerous technical articles on tax issues included in publications such as the Journal of Taxation, the BNA Bloomberg Tax Management Real Estate Journal, and he co-authored the BNA Bloomberg Tax Management Portfolio on Real Estate Leases. A frequent guest speaker at the University of Southern California (USC) Gould School of Law Tax Institute and other professional organizations, he served as a part-time faculty member at the USC Master of Business Taxation Program and is a member of the USC Leventhal School of Accounting Board of Councilors.

Active in his community, Phil has served in leadership positions on nonprofit boards. He is a graduate of the University of Southern California, summa cum laude, with a Master of Taxation and bachelor’s degree in business administration. He received his JD from Loyola Law School, Order of the Coif. Phil is a recipient of the Elijah Watt Sells award. Phil began his career in public accounting at KPMG LLP.
